Thematic Thoughts Part 2

You guys like that alliteration? I know I’m proud of my self.

Even if you aren’t as proud as I am, we should all be proud of how many different interpretations and perspectives we took in thinking about this all-encompassing overarching theme of “What is your story?” In reading through so many thoughts on just that singular question, there were so many directions it went that were completely unrelated to the thoughts that went through my mind when thinking about such a question. I think one of the only ways our ideas merge together is how well they do not merge together and how unique each of our interpretations are, and I think thats what makes our theme beautiful.

The Penny Myth

Making a haiku is tough work! I’ve always thought the penny falling from the Empire State Building myth about it being able to kill someone was pretty funny. Then I learned about terminal velocity and I wonder where that myth comes from! Either way, I made a haiku for it using photoshop, I hope you enjoy it!

For A Good Cause

This might be just for an assignment for DS106, but Alzheimer’s disease is an incredibly awful disease of the mind that affects the memory of those affected. Loved ones are heartbroken as they are forgotten by the victims of this disease. If you would like to help find a cure for this destructive disease that ends someone’s story slowly and without remorse, consider donating. I am attaching the ad I made for the disease to this blog post, and the link to the donation page is in the flyer, and will be included as a hyperlink on this blog post.

For this ad, I used mainly Adobe Photoshop to format the text, image, and design components. I chose to make a ad about Alzheimer’s disease because I have always thought of such a disease as one of the most damning for someone to suffer under.

In going with our theme “What’s your story?”, Alzheimer’s disease leaves a lasting impact not just on the victim, but on the people who love them as well, contributing a great amount to their story and lives.

Favorite Nephew

I chose this assignment because I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to show off this little man.

This little person has the cutest smile I have ever laid my eyes upon. He is my one and only nephew and I just love this photo way too much because he’s rocking the mohawk and got the smile going. Absolutely killing it.

His name is Curran, and he is a huge part of the “What is your story” question. He will forever be a big part of my life and will most likely shape much of my story throughout my life.

Week One Summary

This week was one heck of a ride trying to set up social media accounts I have never used before. Firstly, I decided on the name for my domain as “crimetribe” because of an inside joke my friends and I in my hometown have, and we have our own domain already (“crimetribe.com”) and we were using it to communicate and interact during this challenging pandemic situation. I tried to link that domain to the UMW domains and create a subdomain, but after a few tries I decided it was probably just easier to make a new domain. Creating introductions was a LOT harder than I thought it would be, especially the one on youtube trying to articulate clearly and look at the camera and that kind of stuff. I thought making a blog like this and navigating it would be a little bit harder than it was, but I’m glad it operates basically like a root server management system (cPanel) and like google docs editing options for WordPress. What drove me bonkers is trying to re-login to my centuries old twitter and delete all of the users I followed from back in 10th grade if I were to be using twitter again, and getting rid of all my old, stupid tweets. I especially enjoyed playing around with WordPress and learning the basics of managing my domain. It really gave me a feel for how websites can be run and inspired me to potentially continue this website long after academic study and into building a resume and such.

Thematic Brainstorm

What’s our/my story? We can go virtually anywhere we want with a theme like this, and that is exactly what makes the theme work. We are the creators of our own story, digital storytelling is just a method in which we express that story. The methods in which we express our story, whether it be video, audio, images, etc. doesn’t matter… as long as our story is put out into the world. We as a class could take this wherever we wanted to go! The sky’s the limit for how we express ourselves online, and it doesn’t have to be nonfiction. It could be an entertaining alternate reality sown together through our media presences to create plot points or exhilarating readings, or a nonfiction account of some event like news reporters. As long as its our story, nothing can stop us.
