Hello everyone! My name is Matthew, I am a freshman at UMW this academic year and I am planning on majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Cybersecurity. Great to be here!
This semester, although extremely painstaking for me and not so enjoyable in some areas, was a blast because this class made the end of my weeks so much more fun and creative. As I said in my final project, I made a final project that I would like to reflect on in the near future or otherwise as something I have pride for, that I enjoyed, and was a light in the tunnel during this pandemic. This class has been fantastic for my well-being in general, and I look forward to using the skills I learned this semester and in this class for the things in the rest of my life. I hope all of you have a great summer and here’s to a life without a pandemic!
I hope you enjoy looking at/listening to my project! I decided to dial back and not use video for this project, as my scavenger hunt idea didn’t really work out so I decided to just basically reflect on my life during this semester taking DS106 and the impact this class had on my life. I put a lot of painstaking time into designing the welcome image and I decided I didn’t care about the grade anymore and basically that’s the centerpiece for my project 😂. That alone in my eyes was equal to like 10-15 stars so I made a little mashup of the work I have done over the semester and reflected on this class as a whole with some audio. In summary, I was not going to spend 8 hours of my life making a project that made no sense to make because I would never look back on it again and think it was my best work because I am already on semester burnout, so I made something I will look back on fondly and with pride. Either way, I heavily enjoyed this class, it was a blast and it taught me things I would have never learned in any other class.
Man, this week has been tough trying to come up with ideas for a final project that would equal the amount of work of a 30 star assignment. While I don’t think I’ll come up with anything that will satisfy all my needs and fulfillment for this project, I think I have decided on doing the idea outlined on the post with the projectideas tag, but with a spin on it. I kind of want to do like a scavenger hunt with video, photo, audio, and etc. where it’s like a scavenger hunt through “my story.” I think it would be an interesting idea to incorporate all the forms of media we have learned about this semester, and also be an interactive project that takes you on a journey. I don’t know, something to think about!! Guess you’ll have to see how it turns out when I submit my project next week 🙂
This week was also pretty enjoyable! It’s interesting to go back to a previous assignment I’ve already done to do something completely the opposite or something different, and the mashups and remixes were a cool part of editing across all platforms! The mashup assignments (1, 2) and remix assignments (1, 2) were pretty cool to complete, and I learned a few new things about photoshop and photo editing that I would have never known without doing some of these mashups. Overall, this week was great! You can find my TDCs below.
For this assignment I took the original DS106 radio bumper, and made it the most infuriating or frustrating thing you could hear to do from a radio show. It turned out pretty decently in my eyes, I used Logic Pro to record my voice.
This image is truly cursed, as if the big eyes from the original assignment didn’t look weird enough. This looks like I am squinting, but not squinting at the same time, and then judging you all the while. Enjoy this absolute monstrosity.
For this assignment I took the liberty of putting both PT Barnum from the Greatest Showman and the actor from 12 Years a Slave into an 1800s stock photo. I used photoshop to compile and greyscale the photos. Turned out pretty good, see if you can spot them!
For this assignment I used a photo from a photoshoot my girlfriend and I participated in, and also the UMW campus photo to put myself and my girlfriend getting a piggy back ride in the sky above the UMW Fredericksburg campus as if we were flying like Superman/woman! Super fun, I used photoshop to compile everything together.
This week was also a ton of fun to complete in terms of assignments. The future in terms of the final project is really looking bright for the ideas that I came up with or proposed for what I would like to do, and I really enjoyed making the video assignments (1,2) that were assigned as a part 2 of last week. Those projects required a little bit of video and audio editing, but it was in the end worth it as I marveled at the ridiculousness of my commercial and laughed at how boring my life is with the POV assignment. This week was a less work than I originally thought it would be, but still a lot of fun and a little bit tasking. You can find my TDCs above. Overall, great week!
I think this final project for this class should be something that I really enjoy making and or the subject of the project is something I would enjoy learning about, and that’s why I like the idea Marche had with cryptocurrency. Not much is known about cryptocurrency and how such a intangible item became so valuable over the internet, and I think the very existence of an idea like that for the final project really adds to the “what I want to learn about” side of my story. It might not be about cryptocurrency, but I would very much like to explore some random topic or subject that I know barely anything about and explore it. It may be why coding actually operates, how hardware works for computers, how people might convey or capture an audience through body language or otherwise, etc. (I mention things like this because I am a double major in Computer Science and Communication and Digital Studies so this would go towards understanding the things I am getting a degree in). Ideas like this are things that I would like to explore in my project, and I think if these things are something I can explore I would look forward to this project 100% more.
