Week Five Summary

This week was a doozie! I will admit this week was a lot of work and audio storytelling I can already tell is going to be my hardest form of storytelling to master, but overall this week was a lot of fun! I think my favorite assignment out of this week was the tweet along radio show, it was just so much fun to analyze the different ways the show used sound effects effectively yet subtly. I think listening to “Moon Graffiti” and doing the radio bumper for the ds106 radio were also a lot of fun to do and respond to. The assignment bank assignments (1, 2, 3) were also really fun to complete, admittedly the worst sounds assignment proved to be a struggle with the inability to shield my ears from such wretched sounds. I also like the prospect of a radio talk show that we brainstormed on this week, it seems like an interesting and overall incredibly interesting and creative assignment and I’m really looking forward to it. Overall, although I will probably not be nearly the best at audio storytelling and editing and will probably never get there, it was a lot of fun trying out that new stuff and I look forward to doing the work for this class each week! Radio Show Brainstorm

I think it’s an interesting idea to try and make a 30 minute radio talk show. I would be interested to tell a story about anything really, my story is your story. I do think, however, it will be hard for me to stretch out just me and few other people talking on a radio show out to 20-30 minutes. Maybe we could talk about school life on campus or life as a lifetime student so far? It might be interesting to detail what it was like making the transition from high school to college, or differentiating between school and the workplace. Or maybe if my group member live in different areas like how on Wednesday’s DS106 radio show, there was a person listening from Washington state, we could provide different perspectives on the landscape we live in or talk about different laws in our states that makes our lifestyles much different. Either way I don’t know what else we could talk about keeping in mind our theme, but I’m excited to see what other people come up with!

Worst Sounds EVER

This was literally awful. It was absolutely awful finding all of these sounds and having to listen to them to cut them all together. Honestly, worst few minutes of my entire audio storytelling career, but at least I have an mp3 file that I can abuse my friend’s ears with! Here’s the audio if you dare to listen. In order, the sounds are nails on chalkboard, the one electric dental tool they use on your teeth (you know which one I’m talking about), an alarm to wake up in the morning, and the original phone call ringtone.

Humming this Song Out of My Head

For this assignment, I had Funky Galileo, by Sure Sure, stuck in my head so I hummed the entire song to get it out of there. Unfortunately, its too good of a song to leave so I think humming the whole thing made it more engrained in there. Oh well! I used Logic Pro to record my voice and convert it to an mp3. Here it is:

Sound Effects Short Story

I used freesound.org and Logic Pro to compile all of these sound effects to produce this story. I hope you like it! If anyone is thinking about commenting, tell me what you think the short story is!

Tweet Along Radio

This was honestly one of the most fun hours of my life I have completed that has been, in essence, schoolwork. It’s really just a different experience engaging in not only what people are saying, but the background music and ambience effects that are edited and incorporated into the story to produce such an engaging atmosphere. Through this assignment, I understand a lot easier the claims that Abumrad was making regarding radio, and it was overall just a really good time. Here are some examples of tweets from it:

Radio Bumper

For an eight second little mp3 file that I made, this was actually a lot of fun to make. I used my internal microphone and my audio program called Logic Pro that’s built into my computer to complete this assignment. Here it is!

Audio Graffiti

Sound is as vital of a part of storytelling as any medium similar to it such as visuals or texts. If one separates sound from the video that is tagged along with it, it becomes clear that the sound encourages the imagination to create the video in which the sound suggests. In this level of storytelling, the receiver of the story almost creates half of the story for him/herself.

Sound sets the mood in any situation of storytelling. In a TV show or movie, the soundtrack is a vital part of the subliminal messaging of the show, where certain sounds/music correlate with certain characters and situations. A great example of this directing of mood and atmosphere is Game of Thrones. In much of the show, each character has his/her own thematic song/tune, or types of situations have different keys of music, like minor keys for tense and sad moments or major keys for triumphant and good moments. I will include some great sounds/music from Ramin Djawadi, the score composer for most of Game of Thrones and a true master of his craft. In this way, sound drives how the mind perceives a situation in a story.

A great supporting piece of evidence for this is Abumrad’s explanation of intimacy of radio here, which is where he explains the reason radio hasn’t died out yet is because of the level of empathy and intimate relation someone talking on the radio produces for the receiver of that radio broadcast. For some reason, Abumrad adds, this type of emotional connection happens with the radio broadcaster and the receiver, and this type of connection can be seen with podcasts and talk shows like the ones people listen to in their car in the mornings on their commute to work. Moon Graffiti is also a great example of this, where the listener sympathizes with Armstrong and Aldrin in their futile existence after their moon lander crashes and they only have two hours left to live. In this sense, sound creates intimacy.

Week Four Summary

This week was almost as fun as the last week! Personally, I don’t enjoy photography, but somehow the photoblitz made it really fun for me. I also found it very insightful to analyze what makes photographs effective in this post, as well as reflecting on my past experiences with photos in this one. The In doing the visual assignments (1, 2, 3, 4), while overall extremely time consuming, somehow always become fun to complete once I get into the rhythm of them and finding assignments I would actually enjoy completing. The daily creates were also fun little activities to keep me engaged throughout the week, and overall this week’s focus on visual elements of storytelling was a ton of fun to learn about! Game of Thrones House

Never in my life would I think I would be making my own Game of Thrones house as an assignment for a college level class. This is a first, and I’m not complaining. I used jointherealm.com’s tool for creating a house to make mine, and let me say it was a lot of fun. Anyways, here it is, enjoy!
